Discovering: A New Tribe

Today’s blog post is an extremely exciting one for me to write, as it centres around a brand that I am truly obsessed with. A New Tribe was founded in 2016 by Ella Jones, who driven by a desire to offer a unique selection of homewares, hand picked and sourced from independent designers and one of a kind artisans from all over the world.
Outside A New Tribe

A New Tribe sits proudly in Hackney, no doubt luring in passers by with its carefully curated, transcendent window display in the process. I myself, have only seen the wonders of this store from a virtual distance, however the obsession grows, (and the old bank account takes a hit) with every new unique product that is posted on their Instagram. There are so many designer makers to peruse on their website, so I will focus on three of my favourites, and the products that A New Tribe have carefully selected in order to represent them within their store.

Asterisque

If you’re into ceramics that have a perfectly imperfect, otherworldly feel – then you will absolutely love the plates and vessels created by Asterisque. Inspired by different universes of land, words, landscapes and images found on the Mediterranean coast, each piece is completely unique, with its own fingerprint of pattern and shape. These pieces are made entirely by hand, and are transformed through the use of texture, and experimental glazes that are applied in the making process. When browsing through A New Tribe’s website, I couldn’t help but add Asterique’s ‘Sah Palm Plate’ to my basket, a perfect addition to the shelves in my living room. (See pictured below!)

Mari Masot

Mari Masot is the brand of Spanish designer maker Marissa McInturff. These pieces are hand thrown in Marissa’s studio located in Barcelona, and are also functional as well as decorative. These two part pots have been designed so that the top half can be used as a planter, with drainage through the bottom half. Mari creates a balance between the traditional nature of the medium, and also translates industrial and architectural influences into her designs.

I had to talk about the works of Mari Masot next, as the two products pictured above are currently next on my wishlist – can’t WAIT until payday! Find more of Mari’s works here on A New Tribe’s website

Cold Picnic

Cold Picnic Is a US brand, and was formed in 2010 by partners Phoebe Sung and Peter Buer, both of whom have fine art backgrounds. Their beautiful textiles and home goods are designed at their studio in Brooklyn, however they work wirh artisans in India to create their stunning range of handmade rugs, quilts and bathmats, and a family owned company in New Jersey to make their knit blankets. Using references such as animal print, organic shapes, and the human form – they transform their textiles, and tickle the imagination. I am particularly drawn to their Zebra pillow, and have already reserved a place for it in my house. (See below! Gorgeous.)

In their own words, Cold Picnic’s work ‘explores imagined and misremembered landscapes, and the effects of time and the elements upon their surfaces’. Discover more of their textiles here

Before I leave you to get lost in your very own A New Tribe wormhole, I have to also mention their selection of Moroccan Berber rugs. Each of these have been hand selected by A New Tribe, working closely with artisans in Morocco to bring an ethically sourced, and authentic selection of rugs here to the UK. Each rug is hand made – bringing that original, bespoke element into your one of a kind piece.

If that wasn’t enough (!) additionally with each Moroccan rug purchase, A New Tribe contributes 20% of each sale to Moroccan Animal Aid – a charity in Morocco that helps animals in need. This charity helps feed animals, pays for their vet fees, gives them a place to stay, neuters, rehouses, and most importantly – gives love to mistreated animals. The love and care that goes into every aspect of this business is astounding, and I am simply in awe of Ella, and her team at A New Tribe! Thank you for sourcing this amazing selection of independent designers, and for graciously supporting important causes such as this one along the way. (Is it too early to say I love you…?!)
